How to make a Barbie Doll Cake that 'wows' your guests!

If you're looking to create a magical dessert for birthdays, special occasions, or just for fun, our Barbie Doll Cake recipe is perfect for you. We’ve included options for using either a Barbie skirt pan or two round cake pans, so you can choose the method that works best for you.

Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

For the Buttercream Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Food coloring (optional)

For the Cake Assembly:

  • 1 Barbie doll (or similar doll, with legs wrapped in plastic wrap)
  • Fondant (optional, for decorating)
  • Edible glitter or sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

Option 1: Using a Barbie Skirt Pan

TCQ Pro Tip: Here at TCQ, we use Skirt pans to bake our Barbie cakes, you can buy them at most baking stores or online

Benefits:

  • Perfect Shape: Creates a flawless skirt for the Barbie doll.
  • Easy and Quick: Reduces carving and decorating time.

Where to Buy:

  • Online: Amazon, baking stores
  • Specialty Stores: Baking supply shops.

Why It's Worth It: Achieves a professional look with less effort.

Start by:

  1. Preheat Oven:

    • Set your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare the Pan:

    • Grease and flour your Barbie skirt pan.
  3. Mix Dry Ingredients:

    • In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Cream Butter and Sugar:

    • In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  5. Add Eggs and Vanilla:

    • Beat in the eggs one at a time, then mix in the vanilla extract.
  6. Combine Ingredients:

    • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Mix until just combined.
  7. Bake the Cake:

    • Pour the batter into the Barbie skirt pan. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean - remeber, the pan case is big, low and slow is the way to go!
  8. Cool the Cake:

    • Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely - this may take longer than a traditional cake, but you do not want to ice while it is warm!

Option 2: Using Two Round Cake Pans

  1. Preheat Oven:

    • Set your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare Cake Pans:

    • Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans.

  7. Bake the Cakes:

    • Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Cool the Cakes:

    • Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

Assembling the Cake

  1. Trim and Level:

    • For the two-round cake option, level the tops of the cakes with a knife if needed. For the skirt pan, skip this step.
  2. Stack and Fill (if using round pans):

    • Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of buttercream frosting on top, then add the second cake layer.
  3. Adding the Barbie Doll

  • Insert the Barbie doll into the center of the cake. Make sure her legs are wrapped in plastic wrap to keep the cake clean.
  1. Apply a Crumb Coat:

    • Spread a thin layer of buttercream over the entire cake to seal in crumbs. Chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
  2. Frost the Cake:

    • Use buttercream to create a skirt around the doll, smoothing it out with a spatula - if you're a whizz with the piping bag, you can also try star or rosettes!
  3. Decorate:

    • Add edible glitter or sprinkles if desired.
  4. Finish Decorations:

  • Add any final touches to complete the look. Consider using edible pearls, flowers, or other decorations to enhance the cake’s appearance.

Tips for a Perfect Barbie Doll Cake

  • Cake Pan Choice: If you prefer a more structured skirt, the Barbie skirt pan is ideal. If you only have round pans, you can still achieve a great result with some creative decoration.
  • Custom Touches: Personalize the cake with colors and designs that match the theme of your event.
